Our Team
Being big believers that “People do business with people they know and like”, we’ve prepared a brief description of our team. Hopefully, you’ll get to know us and feel comfortable doing business with American Leak Detection.
BILL & KAREN PETERSON
The American Leak Detection franchise for Palm Beach, Martin & St. Lucie Counties has been owned by the Peterson’s since 1988. As the first franchisees in Florida, they counted on the assumption that what had worked for other franchisees in California and Texas, would also work in Florida. Fortunately, that assumption proved true and the big leap worked out well.
Although both Bill & Karen came from more “corporate” positions, they transitioned smoothly into being business owners. Bill’s past experience building hotels throughout the Southwest U.S. proved to be a solid foundation for the technical skills required to locate hidden leaks. As the Director of an international accounting and consulting practice, Karen transitioned her experience with building businesses for her clients into developing the business for their franchise.
Both Bill and Karen have Bachelor of Science degrees in Hotel/Restaurant Administration. Although “hospitality” degrees may not seem all that relevant to the leak detection business, they both feel that their background in an industry that focuses on customer service has been a big factor in the success of their business. Additionally, their graduate studies in Masters of Business Administration programs in Texas have provided a strong basis for the business operations aspects of running a small firm.
For fun, you’d be likely to find Bill and Karen out on a golf course. Bill’s dad was a Country Club manager in West Virginia, so Bill had a club in his hand since he was a child. Karen took the game up later in life. When she was involved in resort feasibility analysis, there was often a golf component. Deciding that she should learn more about the game, she enrolled in a week-long local golf clinic stating that ‘I’ve always been a quick study; I’ll get this game figured out at this clinic”. After many years of playing, she is now much more humble!
The “Peterson team” holds more customer service awards than any other franchise territory in the system. In addition, prestigious awards include: top producer in the state of Florida since 2002 and Franchisee of the Year in 1996. Bill and Karen readily admit that their success is not attributable to them; it’s the tenure and tremendous depth of experience of their team members. We hope that you’ll have an opportunity to speak with one or more of our outstanding customer service representatives and allow one of our highly skilled technicians to solve your leak problem.
In addition to Karen, customer service representatives include:
Tina comes to us from Parma, Ohio, a Cleveland suburb. Her Ohio experience was significantly different from her present life of living on a 2-acre horse farm. It is apparent that Tina has quite the love for animals. Her first job was in a bird store where she became very educated on the different species. This knowledge was very helpful for her when she took on the task of volunteering at a wildlife sanctuary. Tina’s passion for horses started early on when she took trail rides while on vacation. This love eventually evolved into a 16-year marriage with a horse trainer. Eventually a daughter was added to the family and then it continued to grow with numerous Shetland Sheepdogs (Tina’s favorite breed), rescued cats, parakeets, a canary, a dozen horses, and not to mention the many unwanted rats living in the barn’s rafters.
Vickie came to us in October 2004. She is a born and raised Kentuckian. She moved to Florida in 1993 where she met her husband. Vickie proves herself with a demanding responsibility; heading up the software program that keeps the company ticking. But what may be most admirable is the fact that she took on the task of adopting two wonderful sons. She spends time with her boys at the football field watching dad coach football. Vickie is appreciative that a flexible schedule at American Leak Detection has made this possible in her life. Her previous life of working for Fortune 500 companies is a thing of the past. When asked what really sealed the deal about coming to work at American Leak Detection, Vickie’s reply is that Karen promised her that she wouldn’t have to wear pantyhose!
On the team since November 2005, Cathy is the musician of the group. She attended school as a music major and has over 30 years of flute, piano, and violin experience. Cathy spends her mornings in the customer service department of American Leak Detection and her afternoons as a piano teacher. Hopefully a conversation with Cathy will be music to your ears! Cathy married a musician with the same gifts and has passed those traits down to her talented son and daughter. Prior to American Leak Detection, Cathy worked closely with a major celebrity sports figure, some guy named Jack who’s involved in the golf industry. She now enjoys a different change in pace from her previous career, giving her the opportunity to take family bike rides on a brilliant South Florida day.
Sara, joining us January 2005, is the only native Floridian that works for American Leak Detection. The Petersons have been privileged to know Sara since she was in 4th grade (she was a little young to hire then). Currently she is attending Palm Beach Atlantic University for a degree in Exercise Science. Fitness and nutrition are her passion, so it is easy to understand that her favorite activities are keeping her dog in shape by taking her for a run or a bike ride and working out at the gym. Aside from health, she has a great love for animals and nature. She greatly supports American Leak Detection’s water conservation efforts. Go Green!
Bill has a great team working with him in the field (check out how long they’ve been team members):
Ken, our priceless field manager, has the longest tenure on the team other than Bill & Karen. Ken started with us May 1995 shortly after he received his Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice at Florida Atlantic University — no wonder his leak investigating skills have earned him the title “trouble-shooter!” We are extremely proud of Ken and his recent accomplishment of passing his plumbing contractors exam. That is no easy task (just ask Bill)! As far as life outside of work, Ken thoroughly enjoys surfing the waves and the snowcaps. Those aren’t the only extreme sports going on his life though. With a wife of 10 years, a pit bull named Blue, a Doberman Pincher named Malcolm, a cat named Rachel, an Iguana named Iggy and Noah the Boa, you know life is exciting. With Ken, there is always something to talk about, so if he comes to your house and you have some time, just ask him about his trip to Europe to attend the World Cup.
Our second longest team member is Freddy who came on board June 1996. Originally from Long Island, this New Yorker decided to move to sunny South Florida back in 1995. It proved to be a good move for Freddy for he found his wife of 13 years and has a beautiful daughter. What might be most interesting about Fred is his passion to collect old and new action figures which are mostly bought and sold in Europe. When it’s too nice to be inside, you can find Freddy cruising on his custom Honda motorcycle but don’t worry, he wears a helmet.
If Danny makes a visit to your pool, you may find yourself trying to guess just where that accent came from. Danny was born and raised in Oldham, England. He came to the states for the sunshine, opportunity, and the friendlier people. Apparently, his expectations were met because he has now been with us since February 2001. Although he moved here single, Danny has been married for seven years and is married to Sara’s (in our office) sister. Danny and his wife have a daughter and son.
Surprisingly, we have another England native, Neill, who came to us from London and started with us December 2006. He moved to the U.S. in 1993 as a youngster. In high school, Neill participated on the wrestling team that has lead to his interest in watching UFC fighting. This extremely demanding sport is not for the faint hearted. But if you asked Neill what he likes about himself the most, he would most likely tell you his good looks and exuberant personality.
Prior to joining the team Dan had his own pressure cleaning business. In September 2003, after cleaning Karen’s father’s roof, he got recruited to the team. Dan moved to Florida from Pennsylvania in 1998, of course for the weather. While he was still living north he attended Ursinus College to study Business Management. He took up an interesting job as an Anesthesia equipment technician. As far as his personal life goes, Dan recently got engaged to his love of ten years. In his free time, he thoroughly enjoys racing radio controlled gas cars on a quarter mile track that he built himself in his back yard. The best part though is watching his Rottweiler join the race trying to eat the cars! Dan also enjoys lifting weights and checking out those hard earned muscles in the mirror. Well, that last part was a wild guess but he can’t decide whether he likes working his chest or biceps more.
