Used pools….Where’s the manual

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

It never ceases to amaze me how often buyers of homes with pools never receive the owners(operating) manual.  Actually, an owners manual never really exists even to the original owner, but the original owner usually does a better job of seeking-out the “how-to’s” of maintaining that big water filled hole in the ground.  For the buyer, it truly is a trial- by-fire coming up to speed on what to do (and what not to do) and when to do it.  From what chemicals to use to when  (and why) you should back-wash the filter, I get asked questions all the time and it’s not really my line of work to handle standard maintenance.  One issue seens to come up more often then others, however.  The buyer has been adding water to the pool daily because that’s what you’re supposed to do, right?  It’s just evaporating.  Wrong!  And sometimes this has gone on for years.  Think of all the money wasted in water and chemicals because they just didn’t know.  A simple and inexpensive test is all it takes.  A bucket test can be done in 24 hours and the evaporation variable is removed.
