Green, cost-effective water system to be implemented in New York City

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection unveiled a plan to reconstruct the city's water infrastructure to become more cost- and energy-efficient by 2014.

According to the department, the system overhaul plan has more than 100 initiatives attached, each aimed to increase water conservation and safety while reducing costs for the city's customers. The DEP said it will assess the progress of each initiative annually until the project's completion.

"From finding clean water supplies to building sewage treatment plants to save our harbor, [the] DEP has overcome many obstacles to New York City's continued growth and prosperity," DEP commissioner Cas Holloway said in a statement.

The announcement of the new water infrastructure plan comes as the DEP finished renovations of two wastewater treatment plans, which WBNG-TV states cost $7.4 million. The news station reports the treatment plants will begin using ultraviolet light instead of chemicals to eradicate disease-causing organisms.

According to the news source, the DEP has spent $1.5 billion since 1997 on watershed protection programs.
