Smells of an odd odor, which turned out to be natural gas, were reported at a bank in Hermiston, Oregon, the East Oregonian reports, and utility crews were able to discover the source of the smell – a leaking furnace.
According to the newspaper, employees at the bank had been aware of the smell for a few weeks. When gas was suspected as the cause, workers called utility crews to inspect the property.
"The building manager states they have had numerous complaints from customers and employees of an unknown odor in recent weeks," Hermiston fire lieutenant Rick A. Jones stated in a report for the incident.
Using leak detection methods, fire officials were able determine the origin of the gas leak and plug it, the paper states.
Though the legislation won't be mandatory for businesses such as this bank, reports say that the state of Oregon has enacted a new law making it a requirement for new and remodeled homes to have carbon monoxide detectors.
Rich Hoover, a spokesman for the Oregon State Fire Marshal's Office, told the Statesman Journal that an increase in gas leaks in homes has been an issue in the state in recent years.
