Sinkhole almost swallows up home

A home in Bowling Green, Kentucky, was recently threatened by a growing sinkhole that opened up in the homeowner's back yard. The giant sinkhole comes with a handful of smaller sinkholes that are wreaking havoc on the property. The owners are concerned their home will get swallowed by a sinkhole, or their children could fall and get hurt.

Bowling Green news source WBKO reported the homeowners called Warren County Public Works Director Mac Yowell to help remedy the situation. Yowell said sinkholes are relatively common in Kentucky due to the makeup of the soil in the region.

"It's because of the limestone and the channels that open up and we have these holes develop," Yowell told the source. "It's creeping towards a residence here. In fact, it's two or three feet now from the residence."

To fix the sinkhole, the family will have to pay professionals about $20,000. The homeowner is working with the VFW and American Legion to collect donations to make repairs to the sinkhole and protect the family and property from damage, the source reported.

There is sinkhole insurance available to homeowners concerned about paying for similar repairs. The Morning Call reported that sinkhole insurance can help homeowners pay for any damages to the home caused by the sinkhole, making it stable. However, some sinkhole insurance providers do not ensure the home is stable, only covering external repairs to the damage. Therefore, it is important for homeowners to thoroughly research their sinkhole insurance options before making a decision.
