Sinkhole holds up rail services

A sinkhole recently popped up near the Geraldton Port in Australia, forcing officials to suspend rail transport services until investigators can identify the cause of the sinkhole. The obstruction was found near construction of the port's new in-loading facilities.

Australia's ABC News reported once the cause has been identified and repairs have been made the rail line should reopen for services. The rail line had to shut down because a sinkhole could not only swallow up small items, but it could grow in size with added pressure, putting larger objects or buildings in danger of sinking.

Sinkholes have also caused serious problems for homeowners when they appear on their properties, placing homes and families in danger. According to Ginny Zukowski from GoToRealty, homeowners can protect against sinkholes and other forms of water damage through various forms of homeowners insurance.

However, the current housing market is straining homeowners and insurance providers. This, in turn, is forcing many homeowners insurance companies to add new requirements for homeowners to meet before they are approved for roof and sinkhole coverage. These protections also have new limitations, so homeowners should double check all policies before making a purchase.
