Aging infrastructure

Based on a recent report by CNN, 700 water main breaks occur in the United States daily, mostly due to 30 percent of the pipes being 40 to 80 years old. Seven billion gallons of water are wasted each day, and experts believe fixing the infrastructure problems over the next 20 years would cost $335 billion.

The amount of water leaked from U.S. homes could exceed more than 1 trillion gallons annually, which is equivalent to the annual water use of Los Angeles, Chicago, and Miami combined, according to the EPA.

Water Usage and costs

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the national average for water cost is $2 per 1,000 gallons, and the average family spends $474 per year on water and sewage. Water charges cost average American households 0.5 percent of their annual income.

According to the American Water Works Association (AWWA), the average American household uses 180-250 gallons of water each day and loses 14 percent of that to leakage.
