Do You Have A Leak?

In Your Home:

  • Your water bill escalates over a period of weeks or months for no reasonable reason. (Compare your bills month to month.)
  • The sound of running water (like a toilet running) when no water is being used.
  • Your water meter continues to spin after all water has been turned off. (Make sure that there are no running toilets or faucets then mark the “Diamond Shape” indicator on your meter; don't use any water for one hour; then check the meter. If the indicator has moved, you may have a leak.)
  • Your walls or floors have wet, spongy, moist or discolored areas for no known reason.
  • You can smell foul or musty odors coming from floors or walls near drains or sewers.
  • You find warm spots on your floor, mildew or moisture under carpets or vinyl floors.
  • Chronic sewer backup problems.
  • An unusually damp foundation or slab.
  • Your foundation cracks, vegetation grows unevenly, or earth shifts for no apparent reason.
  • Mold growth on walls or in cabinets.

A few tips for the colder seasons…
Remember the old adage that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure? It's true of many things - including winterizing your water pipes.

  • If you have pipes outside, in an attic, or in an unheated garage or basement, wrap them with foam or insulation secured with good duct tape, or with heat tape containing a heat element designed to prevent freezing.
  • If you have heat tape already installed, make sure it still works, and replace it if it's worn or loose. Avoid overlapping heat tape to guard against fire.
  • Insulate outside faucets and then place a container, plastic bag or foam cover over the wrapping to prevent exposure. Foam covers that clip onto the faucet and fit snugly against the house are available from most hardware stores.
  • When freezing weather is anticipated, turn an upstairs and a downstairs faucet on to a slow drip.
  • Watch for signs of water leaks, including unusually high water bills, unusual odors, running toilets, dripping faucets, mildew or moisture under carpets, and the sound of running water when nothing is turned on.

In The Pool:

Don't take a risk when the summer months come around. Take the time to test your pool every month to make sure you don't have a hidden leak draining your pocketbook.

Your pool or spa may be leaking if...

  • You lose 1/8 inch of water or more in 24 hours (1/4 inch during the hot summer months)
  • If you suspect the loss to be evaporation, contact American Leak Detection for the current evaporation factor based on climate and weather
  • You find algae forming too soon after a chemical treatment
  • You find loose or falling tiles or pool deck cracks. (All are signs that the surrounding ground is unsettled.)
  • You have an automatic filler that is constantly releasing water to keep the pool filled
  • Your pool/spa is slumping or has settled into the ground, or cracks and gaps appear in the pool shell
  • You find standing water, mushy spots, dead plants, or uneven grass growth around the pool/spa area

The Bucket Test...

If you do suspect a pool leak a simple “Do-It-Yourself” test can help confirm whether you really have a leak or the water loss is from normal evaporation. In order to have enough volume for the test, you will need a five-gallon bucket, one of those big white or orange buckets like they have at home improvement stores.

  1. Fill the pool to the normal operating level (half way up skimmer opening).
  2. Turn off all pool pumps and any auto-fill device, if there is one.
  3. Fill a five-gallon bucket with pool water to within 1” of the top.
  4. Place the filled bucket on the 1st or 2nd step of the pool with the bucket immersed at least 6 inches into the pool water. If the bucket is not stable, you can put a brick or similar object inside to keep it from tipping over or floating away.
  5. Mark water level inside the bucket.
  6. Mark the pool water level on the outside of the bucket.
  7. Turn the pool pumps back on (but not any auto-fill devices).
  8. Do not swim or use the pool during the test period.

After 24 hours compare the two water levels. If the pool water level has gone down more than the bucket water level, there is probably a leak. If the levels remain the same, you are experiencing normal evaporation.

Note:

  • If you have a spa, fountain, waterfall, or negative/vanishing edge, the pool will lose slightly more than the bucket since the evaporation rate will increase due to aeration.
  • If it rains during the 24 hour period, you should repeat the test for accuracy.
