You filled the pool three days ago, and the water line is already dropping. It’s July in Nashville, the heat index has been hovering near 100, and you’re standing at the edge wondering whether you’re watching normal summer evaporation or money disappearing through a crack in the shell or plumbing. The short version: evaporation and leaks look identical from the pool deck. Both lower the water line. Both make you reach for the hose. The difference is that a leak charges you twice and never stops until it’s found, while evaporation follows predictable patterns tied to weather. Knowing which one you’re dealing with starts with understanding what normal actually looks like for a Nashville pool.
Normal Evaporation vs. a Real Leak in Nashville’s Climate
Most evaporation benchmarks you’ll find online were built for drier parts of the country. The commonly repeated rule of thumb, roughly a quarter inch of water loss per day, is a national average that assumes conditions very different from Middle Tennessee’s humid subtropical climate. Nashville averages around 70% relative humidity year-round, with monthly averages staying between roughly 63% and 74%. That moisture in the air slows evaporation from the pool surface compared to what the same heat would do in Phoenix or Las Vegas.
Nashville’s July highs average near 89 to 90 degrees, which drives evaporation, but the season’s comparatively high humidity partly offsets what that heat would do in a drier region. EPA WaterSense estimates that an uncovered 500-square-foot residential pool can lose between 12,000 and 31,000 gallons per year to evaporation depending on climate and sun exposure. Where a Nashville pool falls in that range depends on factors like wind, water features, and shade. If your pool is uncovered and running a fountain or waterfall, you’ll lose more. A covered pool in a sheltered yard loses far less. In practice, the quarter-inch rule likely overstates your expected daily loss here. If you’re seeing closer to half an inch or more on a calm, storm-free day, that’s worth investigating rather than chalking up to summer heat.
How to Run the Bucket Test
The bucket test is the most reliable way to separate evaporation from a leak, and it doesn’t require anything beyond a 5-gallon bucket and a permanent marker.
The setup matters as much as the result. Place the bucket on the first or second step so it sits in the same sun and wind as the pool surface. Fill it with pool water to about an inch from the top. Then mark the water level on both the inside of the bucket and the outside at the waterline. The outside mark tracks what the pool itself is doing; the inside mark tracks what pure evaporation does to a comparable volume of water under identical conditions.
Before you start the clock, turn off any auto-fill valve on the pool. If it’s running, it will compensate for water loss during the test and give you a false “no problem” result. Let everything run undisturbed for a full 24 hours without swimming or adding water.
One important timing note: Nashville’s summer storm pattern can ruin a bucket test. July is typically the wettest month in the region, and even a brief afternoon thunderstorm adds water to both the pool and the bucket unevenly, invalidating the comparison. Check the forecast first and choose a dry 24-hour window. If rain interrupts the test, start over.
Reading the Results & Narrowing Down the Source
When 24 hours have passed, compare the two marks. If the pool’s water level dropped roughly the same amount as the water inside the bucket, you’re seeing evaporation. If the pool dropped noticeably more, that additional loss has to come from somewhere other than the air. A gap of an eighth of an inch might fall within normal variation. A quarter inch or more of extra loss beyond the bucket is a reliable indicator of a leak. If the result is ambiguous on the first run, repeat the test on another calm, dry day before drawing a conclusion.
Pinpointing Pressure-Side vs. Suction-Side Leaks
If the bucket test points toward a leak, a second round can help narrow down where it’s coming from. Run the test twice: once with the circulation pump on for the full 24 hours, and once with the pump off. Loss that shows up primarily when the pump is running points to the pressure side of the plumbing, the return lines and fittings that carry water back to the pool after it leaves the pump. Loss that persists or increases with the pump off tends to point to the suction-side plumbing or the pool shell itself. The suction side pulls water toward the pump through the skimmer and main drain lines; a crack or loose fitting there can draw in air and water simultaneously.
A few signs that often accompany a suction-side issue: air bubbles spitting from the return jets, a gurgling sound from the skimmer, or the pump losing prime more frequently than usual. These aren’t confirmation on their own, but they’re consistent with what we see when a suction line has developed a problem.
Other Signs Worth Checking
Pool leaks don’t always route water into the surrounding soil quietly. There are physical clues worth examining before or alongside the bucket test.
- Soft or saturated ground: Wet soil near the equipment pad, heaving around the pool deck, or ground that feels unusually soft along the return lines can mean water is escaping underground rather than evaporating.
- Cracked tile or deck settling: Hairline cracks in the pool shell or tile, or a deck section that has shifted or sunk unevenly, can indicate the structure is moving in response to water saturation beneath it.
- Persistent chemical imbalance: A pool that keeps demanding extra chlorine or can’t hold stable pH despite consistent treatment may be losing treated water to a leak and being refilled with untreated tap water through the auto-fill valve, diluting everything you’ve added.
Why a Slow Pool Leak Costs Nashville Homeowners Twice
Pool leaks aren’t just a water bill problem in Nashville. They’re a water and sewer bill problem. Metro Water Services charges both the water and wastewater portions of a residential bill based on actual metered consumption. That means every gallon that passes through the meter to refill a leaking pool generates a sewer charge as well, even though none of that water enters the sewer system.
Metro Water Services does offer a residential sprinkler credit that adjusts sewer charges for water used to irrigate lawns or wash cars between April and November, but that credit doesn’t apply to pool refill water. If your auto-fill valve is running continuously to compensate for a leak, that water is metered and billed in full on both sides with no automatic offset. Metro Water Services does maintain a separate Pool Adjustments policy, and the Metropolitan Code of Laws provides a limited concealed-leak adjustment for qualifying repairs. These are one-time or restricted provisions that require documented repairs and specific conditions. They aren’t a routine remedy for ongoing auto-fill driven by an undetected leak. The cost of leaving a leak unresolved accumulates every billing cycle, on top of whatever structural damage the escaping water causes over time.
Getting a Clear Answer
A bucket test that clearly shows more loss in the pool than the bucket is the signal to act. So is one that comes back inconclusive after a second attempt in good conditions. At that point, continuing to guess and refill is just adding to the bill while the problem stays in place.
